Today, I am going to give you guys my thoughts on Hoàng Thùy Linh's first music video debuted off of her 2013 EP. The last time Hoàng Thùy Linh was in the spotlight of the Vietnamese media, she was taking a beating much like in this video.
In September of 2007, a 19-year-old Thùy Linh got caught up in one of Vietnam's biggest sex scandals. A sex tape of her and her boyfriend was leaked online.1 You might think that releasing a sex tape would be a career booster, however, this is Vietnam we are talking about. Vietnam still is a very conservative nation. Porn is illegal in Vietnam, and media is heavily censored. Unlike Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, Hoàng Thùy Linh's career in the entertainment industry came to a screeching halt after her scandal broke. Her popular TV drama series Vàng Anh's Diary, in which she played protagonist Vàng Anh, was canceled, with Thùy Linh issuing a public apology on the final airing of the show.
Can't keep a girl down, though. Thùy Linh was able to shake it off like Taylor Swift, and now she is swinging back with some fearsome Vpop.
Last Time has a Britney Spears feel to it, IMO. I find it quite interesting that the entire song is in English. I'm cool with that. That just makes it easier for me to understand what the song is about. This approach shows me that Vietnam is starting to adopt a more modern and progressive stance when it comes to content creation.
Last Time is one of those music videos that leaves you feeling both confused and aroused. Domestic violence is pretty uncool. Yet, dare I say that it was kind of hot? Am I a bad person for thinking that? Watching this MV leaves me feeling like a dirty little whore. I think I need to go take a shower now.
I did my due diligence. I watched the video for research purposes...and I can confirm that the video was legit. ↩
